In 2003 I had quite a jumpy Christmas holidays: Christmas Eve in Tapei, Magic Kings in Beijing , and, in between, New Year Eve in Cambodia . It was a short trip, 6 days only, but intense.
Because we were quite short of time, we decided to focus on the Angkor temples and then just went back to the capital in a river detour through Battambang.
Cambodia 's recent history is horrifying. The Khmer Rouge atrocities during the 70's opened deep injuries that have not healed yet. The country is just starting to do better but there is still poverty in sight everywhere.
That near past of horror contrasts with the long gone days of splendour reflected in the temples of Angkor
