Depending on who you ask, Taiwan is a country or a rebel province of China . Independently of what it is, the certain thing is that Taiwan shares with the continent many centuries of history and tradition. On the other hand, the decades of relative self government have given this region its own characteristics. Taiwan is at the same time more traditional and more modern than Chinese.

The traditions are better preserved here because the island escaped the Cultural Revolution and other communist mishaps. On the same time, an early economic development, together with Western and Japanese influence received during these years of self-government have made Taiwan a modern and prosperous place.
